Cathryn Castle Garcia
I'm Cathryn Castle Garcia. I'm 60 years old and I've been in the diving industry practically my entire life. I took my first breaths from a scuba regulator at age 18, and it changed my life. I knew right away that I wanted to make a career out of scuba diving.
I'm pleased to say I've been in the scuba industry for 40 years, and have worked in a wide range of scuba-related positions: instructor, boat captain, dive center owner, EMT and hyperbaric chamber operator, photojournalist, manufacturer's sales rep, Uwatec marketing manager, scuba textbook author, and more.
I spent 25+ years as executive editor of Dive Training and Dive Center Business magazines (which ceased publication in 2020 as a casualty of the pandemic), and managing editor of California Diving News. I recently began contributing to a new publication, Scuba Diving Industry Magazine.
I have been a featured speaker at Beneath the Sea (NJ), Scuba Show (CA) and US Dive Shows (DC and CA) and a film presenter/panelist at The International Ocean Film Festival, the San Diego Underwater Film Expo, the Houston Underwater Film Fest, the Beneath the Sea Film Expo, and the DC Dive Show Film Fest.
I consider the annual DEMA event to be a reunion of my scuba industry family. I don't know how many DEMA shows I've attended over the years, but I'm guessing it's 25 or more.
I am a 2001 inductee into the Women Divers Hall of Fame and have been awarded SSI Platinum Pro 5000 recognition. I remain an active SDI/TDI instructor.
Together with my husband Capt. Gui Garcia, I own C2G2Productions.com, specializing in wildlife and underwater filming, content creation, publishing and consulting.
We recently moved to Faial Island in The Azores, where we are renovating an oceanfront house that will soon be a luxury retreat for vacationing divers and whale watching enthusiasts.
